Insert a Coin for your Witcher

The Witcher Season 2 has just dropped and I am ecstatic, hopefully you've been re-watching the 1st Season in eager anticipation like I have! If you don't know the Witcher world let me give you a quick summary. It's a gritty sword and sorcery story which follows Geralt of Rivia through his many adventures fighting Monsters and Men. Geralt is a Witcher, one of the last of his kind, a chemically and magically enhanced human whose sole purpose is to stomp out evil wherever it may hide. The Witcher universe is filled with many books and games that make it storied and filled with deep rich lore, no one knows this lore better than Geralt's actor himself Henry Cavill who is so knowledgeable on the subject that he's often times correcting writers on set or suggesting a different thematic quote from the original source material. Now that you're up to speed on the antics of Geralt of Rivia let me suggest some Witcheresque games you can play in RCADE today!

First off the bat (or sword in this case) we have Wizards & Warriors II: Ironsword for the Nintendo Entertainment System which is a sword swinging, monster slaying platformer where you take control of Kuros on his quest to slay an evil wizard and save the world from 4 elementals. In the Witcher you wield swords and cast different "Signs" which are spells that have different effects, here in Ironsword however the great Kuros can acquire several different spells across the game. Particularly handy is the "Silver Fleece Spell" which grants the player some invulnerability similar to Geralt's Quen sign. If this wasn't enough of a comparison between the stories then just consider the fact that both the main characters in these games are absolute hunks, check out that cover art!

Golden Axe is a side scrolling beat-em up with an emphasis on fantasy. Think Streets of Rage but with a axes, swords and fire breathing lizard mounts. It was released on the Sega Mega Drive in 1989 and made it's mark on the gaming world spawning a whole series. A big inspiration was Conan the Barbarian but I'm sure the Witcher would have been too. While it isn't the exact same as The Witcher 3 Golden Axe shares an excellent soundtrack, the first time I played both of these games I was humming the tunes for the rest of the day.

If slaying beasts and recovering from grave wounds by drinking grog isn't enough to compare this list to the Witcher games then I have one more trick up my sleeve comparison to draw, I suck at all of them. I mean I'm terrible, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy them because I really really do. If you're down this neck of the woods I recommend giving them a shot! Gaming is Gaming.
